Biography:
Saint Maurice (also Moritz or Mauritius) was the leader of the legendary Roman Theban Legion in the 3rd century. St Maurice, the knight of the Holy lance, is regarded as the greatest patron saint of the Holy Roman Empire. A Roman commander of Egyptian descent, Maurice is said to have gained sainthood after refusing to have his legion massacre a Christian uprising. Worshipped as early as 460 AD, St. Maurice has had numerous artwork, structures, bridges, churches, and even a castle dedicated to him. It is said and has been recorded that during his life time St. Maurice had in his procession a spear called the “Lance of St. Maurice” or the “Holy Lance of Hapsburg” and to this day is part of the Imperial Regalia of the house of Hapsburg in Vienna. The spearhead is bound with gold, copper, and silver threads to a nail, purported to be one of the nails of the Crucifixion of Christ.
